How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF Online

Updated 2026-08-16 · 4 min read

A 20-page packet without numbers is a meeting tax. “Look at the third page after the table” is how people open the wrong sheet. Stamping numbers is a two-minute job. Paying for Acrobat, or uploading a contract to a random stamper, is how that job gets expensive.

PDF Page Numbers on DevOkk.com draws the numbers in the browser. You pick position, format, start index, font size, and color. No account. The PDF is not sent to DevOkk to finish the overlay.

Number last, not first

Page numbers describe the file you are about to send. They do not describe the file you started with.

If you still need to drop a blank sheet, use PDF Delete Pages first. If the scan is out of order, use PDF Sort first. If you are combining exports, merge first. Then stamp.

Numbering a draft and then deleting page 2 is how you ship “Page 4 of 9” on page 3. Recipients will notice. They will not assume you had a clever scheme.

Printed numbers already on a scan are a separate problem. This tool overlays a new mark. It does not erase the old footer. If both are visible, you have two indexes. Move the new number, or accept that a messy scan needs a desktop editor.

Position, format, and start index

Position. Six placements: top or bottom, left / center / right. Bottom-center is the boring default and the right default. Use a top corner for slides that already have a bottom caption. Use a side if the footer is a thick legal bar.

Format. 1 is quiet. Page 1 of N is what you want when people will say page numbers out loud. Match the rest of the packet if you are inserting this file into a larger binder later.

Start number. Cover-as-page-1 is a choice. Some packets want the cover unnumbered and the form starting at 1. This tool numbers every page it processes, from the start index you set. If the cover must stay blank, delete it from a copy, number the rest, then merge the cover back in front - or number from 1 and live with a number on the cover.

Size and margin. 10–12 pt is readable on Letter and A4 without shouting. Bump the margin if the number kisses the edge or a hole punch. Drop the size if it collides with a scanned footer.

Color is usually black. Use a darker gray only if the page background is already busy and black looks stamped-on. Do not use a light color on a scan. It will vanish in print.

Stamp the numbers in the browser

  1. Finish order and content. The file you drop should be the file you mean to send.
  2. Open PDF Page Numbers.
  3. Drop the PDF. Confirm the page count.
  4. Set position, format, start index, font size, margin.
  5. Run the stamp. Download.
  6. Open the result. Check page 1, a middle page, and the last page. Confirm N in “of N” matches the real count.

If a landscape page puts the number in a surprising place, that is the overlay sitting in the same corner of a rotated box. Check those pages explicitly.

Encrypted files will not open. Very large files can stall the tab. Neither is a reason to upload the same contract to a cloud stamper.

Overlay limits

The number sits on top of the page. It does not push content up. It does not create a running header style guide. It does not skip “section A” and restart in “section B” with two counters.

If you need Roman numerals on the preface and Arabic on the body, you are in desktop-editor territory. Split the preface, number each piece with different formats and start values, then merge. That is a real workaround. It is also more work than most packets deserve.

Stamping does not encrypt the file. It does not remove author metadata. If the PDF is leaving your machine, handle those separately.

Download the numbered packet

Open PDF Page Numbers only after the pages are final. If they are not, fix order with How to reorder PDF pages or drop extras with How to delete pages without Adobe.

Then stamp once. Send that file. Do not number a second time on top of the first overlay unless you enjoy two competing footers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start numbering at something other than 1?

Yes. Set the start index. That is how you number an appendix that should begin at 12, or skip a cover you already removed. The tool stamps what you ask for. It does not read existing footers and continue them.

Which position should I use?

Bottom-center is the default for most letter and A4 packets. Use a corner if the footer already has a logo or a legal line. Open a page at 100% after you stamp. If the number sits on a scanned footer, move it or increase the margin.

Does adding numbers upload the PDF?

No. PDF Page Numbers draws the numbers in the browser. You do not create an account. The file is not sent to DevOkk to complete the stamp.

Should I number before or after I delete and reorder pages?

After. A stamped ‘3 of 10’ is wrong the moment you drop a page or swap two sheets. Finish delete, sort, and merge first, then number once.

What formats can I stamp?

Bare 1, Page 1, 1 of N, or Page 1 of N. Pick the one the recipient already uses. A contract packet that says ‘Page 3 of 12’ is easier to discuss on a call than a lone 3 in the corner.

Why do the numbers cover the text?

They are an overlay. They do not reflow the original layout. Increase the margin, drop the font size, or pick another corner. If every page already has a dense footer, you may need a desktop editor - or accept that the scan was not designed for a second footer.
