What This Healthy Weight Calculator Computes - a Band, Not a Destiny Weight
A healthy weight calculator on this site inverts adult BMI. You enter standing height only. The primary answer is the kilogram interval that would keep BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, the World Health Organization adult “normal” band: minimum = 18.5 × m² and maximum = 24.9 × m². The default height is 175 cm, which is 1.75 m. Height squared is 3.0625 m². Then 18.5 × 3.0625 = 56.66 kg and 24.9 × 3.0625 = 76.26 kg. Pounds are those kilograms times 2.2046226218, about 124.9–168.1 lb.
That interval is a screening band, not a diagnosis, not a body-composition result, and not “ideal weight.” Ideal-body-weight formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) return one kilogram figure for drug dosing or old insurance tables. Scope is adult and non-pregnant. Children need age- and sex-specific percentiles. Pregnancy needs obstetric weight-gain guidance, not a pre-pregnancy band slapped onto a third-trimester chart. This is not medical advice. A clinician may still use waist, labs, medications, and history that a height-only form cannot see.
Sex is not an input here because WHO 18.5–24.9 is not a sex-specific adult table. Devine and Hamwi are sex-specific; that is one more reason not to call this band “ideal weight.” Age is also omitted: older adults sometimes keep more weight on purpose in clinic, and younger adults with high training loads may sit above 24.9 with little fat. Neither story changes 18.5 × m². This page will not invent an age correction to look more medical than the inversion it actually is.

Imperial leftover inches are the inches after whole feet, not total inches. 5 ft 9 in is 69 inches, not 59. If you only know centimetres, stay on metric; 175 cm is the default this page checks against 56.66–76.26 kg. The primary band is always WHO 18.5–24.9; the 20–25 and 18.5–22.9 rows stay labeled informational so they cannot steal the headline.
The 18.5 × m² Formula and a Worked 56.66–76.26 kg Example
Convert 175 cm to 1.75 m. Square it: 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625. Multiply by 18.5: 56.65625 kg, displayed as 56.66 kg. Multiply by 24.9: 76.25625 kg, displayed as 76.26 kg. The width of the band is (24.9 − 18.5) × 3.0625 = 6.4 × 3.0625 = 19.60 kg. Taller adults get a wider kilogram window because m² grows with the square of height; shorter adults get a narrower window even though the BMI limits are the same.
Imperial check at 5 ft 9 in = 69 inches = 1.7526 m. Then m² ≈ 3.0716, min ≈ 56.82 kg, max ≈ 76.48 kg. That is close to the 175 cm default but not identical, because 175 cm is 68.90 inches, not 69. This page converts to SI first so the 175 cm case is exact.

Those examples show why a “healthy weight chart” that lists only one number per height is selling a midpoint that WHO never named.
Why 18.5–24.9, Why Alternate Bands, and Why Athletes Still Break Charts
The WHO adult table is a public-health instrument. It was never designed to certify “healthy” for an individual. Cross-sectional studies still show higher average rates of some cardiometabolic findings as BMI climbs through overweight and obesity classes in many populations. That is a group pattern. Your labs can disagree with your band. Sitting at 24.8 versus 25.1 is an administrative cliff, not a sudden change in physiology.
Several Asia–Pacific consensus statements recommend overweight action from BMI 23 and obesity from 25 for some East and South Asian groups. A BMI 18.5–22.9 row on this page is an informational sketch of a lower upper bound, not an auto-switch of ethnicity. This calculator does not ask ancestry and does not silently replace 24.9 with 22.9. If your clinic uses a different table, follow the clinic.
High lean mass inflates the kilograms that would land inside 18.5–24.9. A rugby forward whose “healthy” BMI band tops out at 80 kg may be healthier at 95 kg of trained mass than at 75 kg of underfed mass. Low lean mass deflates the story the other way: an older adult at 58 kg on a 175 cm frame can still have little muscle and a large waist. Pair the band with waist circumference and, if you need an estimate, a Navy body-fat estimate. Even those are still estimates.
Children, Pregnancy, Amputees, and Other Cases This Page Refuses to Relabel
Pediatric “healthy weight” is plotted on growth charts. A 10-year-old whose adult-style 18.5–24.9 inversion looks “normal” may be high or low on a percentile curve. Applying the adult WHO table to a child is a category error. This tool will still do the arithmetic if you type a short height, but the labels remain adult WHO labels and are the wrong clinical language for pediatrics.
During pregnancy, recommended gain starts from pre-pregnancy BMI, not from a height-only band recomputed at 30 weeks. Fetus, placenta, amniotic fluid, and expanded blood volume are not adipose tissue. Do not use this calculator to “check if the pregnancy is in a healthy range.”
Limb loss, edema, plaster casts, and ascites distort weight independently of height. Adjusted formulas exist in rehabilitation literature; they are not implemented here. Extremely short or tall adults also sit farther from the populations Quetelet studied. Use clinical judgment when the body is not a textbook cylinder.
Healthy Weight Versus Ideal Weight, Overweight Screening, and Calories
Ideal weight formulas were built for dosing and insurance, not for a personal aesthetic target. At 175 cm, Devine for a male (68.90 in, extra ≈ 8.90) is about 70.5 kg - inside this page’s 56.66–76.26 kg band, but that overlap is coincidence, not identity. At other heights the IBW point can sit near an edge of the WHO band. Always compare on the ideal weight calculator instead of assuming the words mean the same thing.
If today’s weight already sits above 24.9 × m², the overweight calculator reports BMI class and how many kilograms exceed the normal-band maximum. If today’s weight sits below 18.5 × m², the underweight BMI calculator reports thinness grade. Neither page diagnoses disease or an eating disorder.

History, Charts, and Why Search Results Keep Asking for One Healthy Number
Quetelet’s nineteenth-century ratio of weight to height squared described an “average man,” not a wellness brand. Public-health agencies later needed a cheap field metric. BMI won because a tape and a scale beat a hydrostatic tank. Once BMI had cutoffs, websites inverted them into “healthy weight charts.” The inversion is valid algebra. The marketing of a single kilogram as “your” healthy weight is not.
Search traffic still clusters on “healthy weight for 175 cm,” “ideal vs healthy weight,” and “BMI 18.5 to 24.9 in pounds.” The honest 175 cm answer is 56.66–76.26 kg (about 124.9–168.1 lb). Ideal weight is a different family of equations. How to calculate the band is 18.5 × m² through 24.9 × m². Anything beyond that - fat loss, muscle gain, medication, surgery - is clinical work this page will not perform.
Stigma is a documented harm of treating a chart as a verdict. Crash diets, weight-cycling, and using a calculator as self-punishment are not what a screening inversion is for. If food or weight thoughts are taking over your life, contact a clinician or a local eating-disorder resource. A position inside 18.5–24.9 cannot diagnose wellness, and a position outside it cannot diagnose an eating disorder.
Why 24.9 and not 25.0? WHO sentences treat 25.0 as the start of overweight, so the last tenth inside “normal” is written 24.9 in countless teaching charts. Algebraically, 24.9 × m² and 25 × m² differ by 0.1 × m²: 0.31 kg at 175 cm. That is less than a glass of water. The cliff is administrative. This page still uses 24.9 for the primary maximum so the band matches the same table as the BMI calculator. The informational 20–25 row uses a clean 25 on purpose and is labeled alternate so it cannot overwrite the primary 24.9 ceiling.
Waist-to-height ratio is a different screening idea: some public-health notes suggest keeping waist under half of height. At 175 cm that would be a waist under 87.5 cm, independent of the 56.66–76.26 kg band. You can have a “healthy” BMI and a large waist, or a BMI of 27 and a modest waist. This calculator does not collect waist and will not pretend the kilogram band sees visceral fat. Pair height-only math with a tape if the question is metabolic risk rather than kg/m² inversion.

Notice how a 20 cm height change adds tens of kilograms to both ends. A chart that lists one “healthy” kilogram per height is flattening that window into a slogan.
A height-only band also ignores clothing, time of day, and scale calibration. Evening height is often a centimetre shorter than morning height; that centimetre changes m² and therefore both ends of the range. At 175 cm versus 174 cm, m² drops from 3.0625 to 3.0276, and the 18.5–24.9 window moves from 56.66–76.26 kg to 56.01–75.39 kg - more than half a kilogram on each end. Measure height the same way each time if you are comparing the band across months. Do not chase the tenth of a kilogram that a different wall mark invented.
