Overweight Calculator: WHO Cutoffs Are Screening, Not a Diagnosis
Updated 2026-09-03 · 6 min read
Overweight calculator BMI searches usually mean one thing: Am I at or above 25? The World Health Organization adult table uses 25.0–29.9 for overweight and 30.0+ for obesity classes. DevOkk’s Overweight Calculator computes the same kg/m² as BMI Calculator but foregrounds the ≥25 ladder: how many kg above the normal upper bound (BMI 24.9) you would sit at your height, and which obesity class applies if you cross 30, 35, or 40.
That ladder is screening language from public-health tables. It is not a diagnosis of obesity as a disease, not a treatment authorization, and not proof you must lose weight on a timetable invented by a website. This page explains the cutoffs, the 0.1-point bucket problem, athletes and age, Asian guideline variants, and honest sibling tools: Healthy Weight Calculator, Underweight BMI Calculator. The master disclaimer lives in Why BMI is not a diagnosis.
The formula is still two measurements
Adult BMI = weight kg / (height m)². Imperial: 703 × lb / in². Default DevOkk example 175 cm, 85 kg → 85 / 1.75² ≈ 27.76 → overweight, not yet obesity class I.
The overweight page adds contextual kg math: at 175 cm, BMI 24.9 caps near 76.3 kg. At 85 kg, you are roughly 8.7 kg above that upper normal bound-arithmetic help for people who think in kilograms on the scale, not a prescribed loss target.
WHO ladder from 25 upward
| Band | BMI range | Screening label |
|---|---|---|
| Below overweight | < 25.0 | Not in WHO overweight/obesity bands |
| Overweight | 25.0–29.9 | Sometimes called pre-obesity in texts |
| Obesity class I | 30.0–34.9 | |
| Obesity class II | 35.0–39.9 | |
| Obesity class III | ≥ 40.0 | Sometimes termed severe obesity |
Crossing 25.0 does not switch on a disease at midnight. 27.8 and 24.8 are near-neighbors. The tool prints buckets because published tables use buckets.
Overweight is not obese-and neither is a diagnosis alone
Colloquial speech merges overweight and obese. WHO separates them at 30. Insurance forms may use either word sloppily.
Clinically, obesity as a disease involves more than BMI-symptoms, comorbidities, functional impact, sometimes waist and metabolic labs. A browser overweight label skips all of that.
DevOkk’s headline is intentional: WHO cutoffs are screening, not a diagnosis.
Athletes, older adults, and composition
Athletes: dense muscle moves BMI into overweight with low body fat. The overweight calculator will say overweight; the lifter may be metabolically fine. Body Fat Calculator tape estimates composition differently; neither tool clears you for sport.
Older adults: sarcopenia can lower scale weight while raising fat fraction-“normal BMI obesity.” Overweight screening misses that pattern too.
Age: WHO adult table is not age-adjusted. Frailty and falls risk need geriatric assessment, not BMI alone.
Asian and other guideline variants
Some guidelines use overweight from BMI 23 and obesity from 25 for Asian ancestry populations because cardiometabolic risk rises earlier on average. DevOkk’s default display follows the common WHO 25/30 adult table unless a page says otherwise.
If your clinician uses a different table, the calculator has not failed-you are reading a different convention. Do not shop cutoffs for comfort.
Healthy weight and underweight siblings
Healthy Weight Calculator solves BMI 18.5–24.9 kg band at a height-the “normal” interval, not a single destiny weight. At 175 cm that is about 56.7–76.3 kg.
Underweight BMI Calculator covers below 18.5 thinness splits. Eating disorders occur at every BMI; underweight screening is not an eating-disorder diagnosis either.
Overweight Calculator is the ≥25 mirror: overweight and obesity classes, plus kg above normal upper bound.
All share kg/m². Pick the headline that matches your question.
What overweight screening does not replace
- Waist circumference and waist-to-height for central adiposity
- Blood pressure, lipids, glucose, HbA1c
- Medications that change weight (steroids, psychotropics)
- Pregnancy-adult overweight table is wrong job
- Pediatrics-percentile charts, not 25/30 lines
- Heart failure, ascites, amputation-BMI denominator lies
Energy planning after clinical care might use Calorie Calculator; that is still not a weight-loss prescription from BMI.
Worked kg math at 175 cm
At 175 cm (1.75 m), BMI 24.9 caps near 76.3 kg. Each WHO band has a weight ceiling at fixed height:
| Target BMI | Approximate kg at 175 cm |
|---|---|
| 18.5 (normal lower) | 56.7 kg |
| 24.9 (normal upper) | 76.3 kg |
| 25.0 (overweight entry) | 76.6 kg |
| 29.9 (overweight top) | 91.5 kg |
| 30.0 (obesity class I) | 91.9 kg |
The 0.3 kg step from 76.3 to 76.6 is the entire hop from normal upper bound to overweight entry. Overweight Calculator prints how many kg you sit above 76.3 when you are heavier-context for people who think on the scale, not a mandated loss list.
Insurance, workplace wellness, and forms
Employer wellness portals often flash overweight at BMI ≥25 without waist, lipids, or fitness data. That flash is administrative screening, the same family as WHO tables, not a determination of insurability or job fitness. DevOkk mirrors the math for education; it does not submit to your HR system.
If a form asks for BMI category, report the bucket honestly and separate it from clinical obesity care. Treatment eligibility for pharmacotherapy or surgery uses guidelines that include BMI thresholds and comorbidities-thresholds a browser does not adjudicate.
Composition when the headline hurts
Searchers who land on overweight calculator often already feel judged. Tape estimates on Body Fat Calculator or Army Body Fat Calculator may show lower adiposity than BMI implies for muscular builds-see Army body fat vs Navy tape. That contrast can calm or confuse; it is not permission to ignore central adiposity if waist is high.
“Ideal” single-number weights from drug-dosing formulas disagree with the WHO band; compare in Healthy weight vs ideal weight. None of those pages names a disease.
Children, pregnancy, and the wrong table
Pediatric overweight is not BMI ≥25 on a growth chart. Plot age- and sex-specific percentiles with a clinician. Pregnancy weight gain targets are obstetric, not WHO adult overweight bands. DevOkk’s overweight tool is adult, non-pregnant screening. Using it on a teenager or a pregnant patient and treating the label as authoritative is a category error-same warning as Why BMI is not a diagnosis.
The 24.9 vs 25.0 anxiety
Rounding and unit conversion move people across lines. Measure consistently; do not re-enter heights in shoes. A form demanding one decimal is administrative, not physiological.
If 25.1 triggers panic but 24.9 triggers relief, the index is doing emotional work it was not validated for. Step back; involve a clinician if health is the real concern.
Privacy and misuse
Math is local. Do not paste others’ data to mock them. Do not use an overweight label to pressure a partner or child-the adult table is wrong for children anyway.
Analytics load; BMI inputs are not sent to compute the ratio.
When to open which tool
Overweight Calculator when the question is ≥25 WHO ladder and kg above normal cap.
BMI Calculator when you want the index and full category in one view.
Healthy Weight Calculator for 18.5–24.9 kg band.
Underweight BMI Calculator for below 18.5 thinness bands.
Then stop. Disease names, treatment plans, and compassion belong in care-not in a screening bucket.
Frequently asked questions
What BMI is overweight on DevOkk?
WHO adult screening: overweight is BMI 25.0–29.9. Obesity class I is 30.0–34.9, class II 35.0–39.9, class III 40.0 and above. Overweight Calculator highlights where your BMI sits on that ladder.
Is overweight the same as obese?
No. Overweight is the 25–29.9 band. Obesity starts at 30 in the common WHO table. Both are screening labels, not disease names by themselves.
Does the overweight calculator diagnose obesity-related illness?
No. It computes kg/m² and maps WHO bands. Diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome need clinical assessment-labs, history, waist, sometimes imaging-not a browser category.
How is this different from BMI calculator?
BMI Calculator prints the index and full category. Overweight Calculator emphasizes the ≥25 ladder and how far above normal upper bound (BMI 24.9) you sit in kg. Same physics, different headline.
What about athletes with BMI over 25?
Muscle raises BMI without raising adiposity. Screening overweight is expected for many strength athletes. Pair with composition tools if the question is fat, not ratio-see Navy body fat vs DEXA. BMI still does not diagnose.
Does DevOkk upload height and weight?
No. Browser-local math. WHO bands are population screening conventions, not a personal medical opinion sent to a server.
