Why BMI Is Not a Diagnosis (Athletes, Age, and WHO Bands)
Updated 2026-08-31 · 7 min read
BMI is a ratio. It is not a blood test, not a scan, and not a diagnosis. Search results still treat the number as a verdict: obese, underweight, “healthy.” The World Health Organization adult table is a screening instrument for populations. It was never designed to name a disease in one person standing on a bathroom scale.
This page is the split. Adult BMI is kg divided by metres squared. WHO bands label ranges. They do not tell fat from muscle, they do not apply to children or pregnancy, and they do not replace a clinician. DevOkk’s BMI Calculator runs that formula in the browser. Related screening views are Healthy Weight Calculator, Overweight Calculator, and Underweight BMI Calculator. None of them is medical advice. None of them uploads height or weight to complete the math. There is no account.
If you wanted a personal “ideal” kilogram from height and sex, that is a different family of formulas, covered in Healthy weight vs ideal weight. If you wanted energy needs, that is BMR vs TDEE vs calories burned. Tape-measure body fat is Navy body fat vs DEXA.
The formula is two numbers, not a medical history
Adult BMI = mass in kilograms / (height in metres)². In imperial units the same quantity is 703 × pounds / inches². That is the entire calculation. You do not enter waist, medications, ethnicity, or training age. The default on DevOkk is 175 cm and 70 kg: 70 / 1.75² ≈ 22.86. WHO calls 18.5–24.9 “normal” for non-pregnant adults. 22.86 sits in that band.
The convenience is the limitation. Two people with the same height and weight get the same BMI. One can be a powerlifter. One can have lost muscle after illness. One can have a high waist circumference and metabolic disease at a “normal” BMI. The index cannot see any of that. It was built so epidemiologists could compare groups without a lab. Clinics borrowed it as a first pass. Search engines turned the first pass into a headline.
When the calculator shows a category, read it as “this ratio lands in a published band,” not “you have this condition.”
What the WHO adult bands actually say
For non-pregnant adults, the usual teaching table is:
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5, with thinness sometimes split into mild (17.0–18.49), moderate (16.0–16.99), and severe (below 16.0)
- Normal: 18.5–24.9
- Overweight: 25.0–29.9
- Obesity class I: 30.0–34.9
- Class II: 35.0–39.9
- Class III: 40.0 and above
Those cutoffs are labels on a continuous ratio. Crossing 25.0 does not start a disease at midnight. A BMI of 24.9 and 25.1 are almost the same mass at the same height. The tool still has to pick a bucket because that is how the table is published.
Some clinical guidelines for people of Asian ancestry use lower overweight and obesity cutoffs. DevOkk’s default display follows the common WHO adult numbers. If your clinician uses a different table, the calculator has not “failed.” You are looking at a different convention. Do not shop for the cutoff that feels better.
Athletes, bone, and the overweight band
Muscle is denser than fat. BMI does not know which one moved the scale. A rugby forward or a heavyweight lifter can land in overweight or obesity class I with a low body-fat percentage and a healthy metabolic panel. The reverse also happens: a person with little muscle and a lot of visceral fat can sit in the “normal” band.
If the question is composition, BMI is the wrong instrument. A circumference method is still only an estimate; DevOkk’s Body Fat Calculator uses the US Navy / Hodgdon–Beckett approach and is not DEXA. The Army-style tape page is Army Body Fat Calculator. Lean mass equations live on Lean Body Mass Calculator. All of those are educational. None of them diagnoses sarcopenia or obesity.
The honest use of BMI for an athlete is “this is what the insurance form or the epidemiology paper would print.” It is not “you must cut until the band says normal.”
Children, teens, and pregnancy are not this table
Pediatric weight status is plotted on age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles, not the adult 18.5/25/30 lines. A 12-year-old with an adult BMI of 22 is not “normal” or “overweight” by the adult table; that number is not interpreted that way. Do not paste a child’s height and weight into an adult calculator and treat the category as a pediatric result.
Pregnancy changes total mass for reasons that are not “adiposity for screening.” Gestational weight charts and obstetric BMI interpretation belong with prenatal care. DevOkk’s BMI tool is labeled for adult, non-pregnant screening. A due-date estimate from last menstrual period is a calendar job on Due Date Calculator using Naegele’s rule. That page is also not an ultrasound and not medical advice.
Underweight is a screening label, not an eating-disorder diagnosis
A BMI below 18.5 is labeled underweight. Severe thinness is a still lower band. Those labels are used in public-health and clinical screening. They are not a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, ARFID, or any other eating disorder. Diagnosis uses history, behavior, labs, and specialist criteria. A website that prints “underweight” after two measurements has not performed that assessment.
If you are using a low BMI as a reason to restrict further, stop and talk to a clinician. Underweight BMI Calculator exists to show the WHO thinness splits clearly. It is not a treatment plan and it is not a dare.
The same warning runs the other direction. A “normal” BMI does not prove you are well. Eating disorders occur at every BMI.
Healthy weight is a band at a height, not a destiny kilogram
Healthy Weight Calculator does not invent a new formula. It solves the adult WHO normal band for mass at a given height. At 175 cm, BMI 18.5–24.9 is about 56.7–76.3 kg. That is a range of nearly 20 kg. “Healthy weight” in this sense is not a single goal weight from a magazine.
People search “what should I weigh” and get a single number from an “ideal body weight” equation that was built for drug dosing, not for Instagram. Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi disagree with each other and with the WHO band. The comparison is Healthy weight vs ideal weight.
Overweight Calculator answers a narrower question: does this adult BMI sit at or above 25, and which obesity class if any. It is the same kg/m² with a different headline. Use it when the job is “screening cutoff,” not when the job is “body composition.”
Units, rounding, and the 0.1 that changes the bucket
Height in centimetres versus feet-and-inches, weight in kilograms versus pounds, and rounding to one decimal can move a result across 24.9 versus 25.0. That is arithmetic, not a new diagnosis. If you are filling a form that demands one decimal, use the same unit system the form expects and do not re-measure in a different system hoping for a prettier band.
Self-reported height is often high. Morning weight and evening weight differ. Shoes and a heavy meal are not “BMI fraud”; they are noise. A screening index is noisy. Treat a single home measurement as a snapshot.
DevOkk converts units in the tab. You still have to enter numbers that match the tape or the scale in front of you.
What BMI does not replace
A complete clinical picture can include waist circumference, blood pressure, lipids, glucose, thyroid, medications that change weight, sleep, and mood. BMI is none of those. Online calculators also cannot:
- Prescribe a calorie deficit or a surplus
- Clear you for a sport
- Interpret BMI in heart failure, ascites, amputation, or high-dose corticosteroids
- Apply pediatric or gestational charts
Energy math, if you still want a planning estimate after a clinician visit, is BMR and TDEE on BMR Calculator and Calorie Calculator. Session burn from METs is Calories Burned Calculator. Those are still estimates. They are not a diet prescription.
Privacy is not a diagnosis either
Height and weight run in JavaScript in your browser. They are not sent to DevOkk to finish the formula. Drafts can sit in localStorage for up to 30 days on that device. Clear them on a shared computer. The rest of the site still loads; the privacy policy still applies. Local math does not make the WHO table a personal medical opinion.
Do not paste other people’s measurements into a tool as a joke. Do not use a BMI page to police a partner or a child. The adult table is the wrong table for a child anyway.
The scale that is not a clinic
BMI is a public-health ratio that escaped into the bathroom. Use BMI Calculator when you need the index and the published adult band, with units converted in the tab. Use the sibling screening pages when the question is the healthy-weight interval or a cutoff headline. Then stop. The clinic, not the category label, is where disease names belong.
Frequently asked questions
How is adult BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Imperial is 703 × lb / in². BMI Calculator converts centimetres or feet-and-inches. The default 175 cm and 70 kg is about 22.86, which WHO labels normal for non-pregnant adults.
Does a high BMI mean I have a disease?
No. WHO bands are population screening labels, not a diagnosis of obesity-related disease, diabetes, or an eating disorder. A clinician uses labs, waist, history, and sometimes body-composition methods that BMI cannot replace.
Why is BMI wrong for some athletes?
The formula cannot tell fat mass from muscle or bone. A strength athlete can sit in the overweight or obese band with a low body-fat percentage. Pair the number with a tape estimate on Body Fat Calculator or a clinical method, not with a panic.
Can I use the adult table for children or pregnancy?
No. Pediatric status uses age- and sex-specific percentiles. Pregnancy changes weight independently of adiposity. DevOkk’s BMI tool is an adult, non-pregnant screening formula only. Gestational charts belong with obstetric care. Dating from LMP is a different job on Due Date Calculator.
Does DevOkk upload my height and weight?
No. The formula runs in the browser. Inputs stay in localStorage on your device for up to 30 days. There is no account. The page still loads analytics like the rest of the site; the numbers you type are not sent to complete the math.
What is the difference between BMI, healthy weight, and overweight tools?
BMI Calculator reports the index and the WHO category. Healthy Weight Calculator is the kilogram band for BMI 18.5–24.9 at a given height. Overweight Calculator and Underweight BMI Calculator are screening views of the same adult table, not new physics.
