Protein Grams per kg: What the Calculator Can and Cannot Say

"How much protein?" is the shortest nutrition question and the longest answer. Bodybuilders quote 2 g/kg. Guidelines cite 0.8 g/kg for sedentary adults. Fat-loss threads say 30% of calories. All three can be simultaneously discussed without contradiction if you track which denominator you used.

Sedentary 0.8 g/kg aligns with classic RDA-style minimums for non-athletic adults - enough for many people to maintain nitrogen balance, not necessarily optimize hypertrophy or satiety during a cut.
Strength 1.6 g/kg sits in the band many resistance-training meta-analyses cite for muscle protein synthesis when calories are adequate - still a population summary, not your biopsy result.
Intense 2.0 g/kg covers heavy training blocks, large athletes, or aggressive deficits where higher protein may help lean mass retention - evidence is messier at the top end; more is not infinitely better.
Pick the label that matches recent weeks, not the week you wish you had. A desk job with three lifting days is not "intense" because Monday hurt.
Default story: 80 kg × 1.6 = 128 g
The sample 80 kg person at strength is mid-size adult male in calculator demos across DevOkk. 128 g/day spreads roughly to:
- 32 g × 4 meals - four palm-sized portions if each hit ~32 g
- ~512 kcal from protein at 4 kcal/g - before carbs and fat fill the rest
If you also enter calories and protein percent, the page cross-checks. Example from tool copy: 2500 kcal × 20% / 4 = 125 g - close to 128 g. 2500 × 30% / 4 = 187.5 g - much higher; percent-of-calorie methods inflate protein when total energy is high.

Total body weight vs lean body mass
Most online g/kg advice uses total body weight because scales are common and composition is noisy. Mathematically, protein needs correlate with fat-free mass - muscle turns over amino acids; adipose less so.
Lean body mass (LBM) ≈ weight × (1 − body fat%). DevOkk's Lean Body Mass Calculator estimates LBM from a body-fat percentage you supply - often from Navy tape, not DEXA. Stack two estimates if you propagate bad fat% into LBM into protein.
When LBM framing helps:
- Obesity with fat loss: 2.0 g/kg total weight can mean very high absolute grams; some clinicians think relative to ideal or lean mass instead.
- Very lean lifters: total weight already tracks muscle.
- Athletes with known DEXA: LBM-based targets are sharper - if you trust the scan.
DevOkk's protein page multiplies total kg for transparency. Power users can mentally apply g/kg to lean kg if they accept the error budget.
Example: 80 kg, 15% fat → LBM ≈ 68 kg. 1.6 g/kg lean ≈ 109 g vs 128 g on total weight. That 19 g gap is why "protein math" arguments online talk past each other.
Sedentary vs strength: not a moral ranking
0.8 g/kg is not "wrong" for a person who does not train. It is adequate for many sedentary adults in public-health framing.
1.6 g/kg is not "required" for everyone with a gym membership. It targets progressive resistance where muscle repair and satiety benefit from higher intake.
Jumping sedentary → intense because you started a program yesterday overshoots habit formation. Step multipliers when volume and intensity persist for weeks.
Kidney disease and why the default breaks
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) often requires protein moderation and staged medical nutrition therapy. Absolute grams depend on eGFR, stage, dialysis modality, and medications. A fitness calculator does not know your creatinine.
Healthy kidneys typically handle high dietary protein from food; protein powder megadosing is a different conversation about supplements and overall diet quality.
Do not use DevOkk output to:
- Self-manage CKD, nephrotic syndrome, or post-transplant diets
- Override a renal dietitian's gram cap
- Argue with a clinician that "the internet said 2 g/kg"
Red flags that need medicine, not macros: edema, foamy urine, uncontrolled diabetes with rising creatinine, family PKD with new hypertension.
Not a meal plan
The calculator stops at grams per day (and optional percent check). It does not:
- Schedule 30 g every three hours
- Mandate whey vs tofu
- Time pre-bed casein
- Replace food labels and restaurant unknowns
- Account for leucine threshold per sitting
Building meals is skills + labels + culture. 128 g can be vegan or omnivore; the tool is agnostic.

Protein during fat loss and surplus
In a calorie deficit, higher protein (within reason) often supports lean mass retention and fullness. The page's intense 2.0 g/kg tier acknowledges hard cuts paired with training - not a license to starve with extra powder.
In a surplus, protein above synthesis needs does not linearly build extra muscle - carbs and total energy also matter. Chasing 250 g/day while neglecting training volume misallocates worry.
Energy baseline still comes from BMR/TDEE: BMR vs TDEE vs calories burned. Do not double-count lifting MET sessions and high activity TDEE when arguing you "need" 2 g/kg.
Older adults, pregnancy, and other omitted cases
Older adults often benefit from >0.8 g/kg to fight sarcopenia - guidelines in geriatrics sometimes cite 1.0–1.2+ g/kg with resistance exercise. DevOkk's sedentary tier is not a geriatric prescription.

Adolescent athletes need growth-aware counseling - not adult strength defaults.

Composition vs BMI
BMI is kg/m² screening, not protein science: Why BMI is not a diagnosis. Navy tape body fat is not DEXA. Protein grams do not "fix" a BMI band.

Intense 2.0 g/kg at 70 kg → 140 g. Sedentary 0.8 at 70 kg → 56 g. The spread between couch and hard block is 2.5× - activity label matters enormously.
Percent cross-check: 2136 kcal TDEE (sedentary male demo from calorie page) × 30% protein / 4 ≈ 160 g - near intense 2.0 × 80 kg. 20% protein → 107 g, below strength default. Percent and g/kg diverge unless you tune one to match the other on purpose.
Supplements vs food
The calculator counts grams, not source. Whole foods bring fiber, micronutrients, and satiety. Powder is convenient; it is not magic. Renal risk discussions often target extreme totals and overall diet quality in vulnerable populations - not a single chicken breast.

Re-run the calculator when body weight changes by more than a few kilograms, when you change training phase (off-season to meet prep), or when a clinician adjusts your energy or protein targets. A stale 128 g/day anchor survives too long in meal templates while the person behind it is no longer 80 kg or no longer lifting four days a week. Treat the output like a spreadsheet cell that needs refreshing, not a tattoo.
