Pace vs Speed: What Running Calculators Actually Measure

Runners argue in two languages. One person says they held 5:00 per kilometre. Another says they ran 12 km/h. Both describe the same effort if the math is consistent. Pace and speed are not rival fitness philosophies. They are two ways to print the same ratio between clock time and ground covered.
This page is the translation layer. DevOkk's Pace Calculator solves two of three: pace, time, or distance. Give it any pair and it finds the third, then converts min/km ↔ min/mi and shows race projections at that steady pace. The default example is 5 km in 25:00 → 5:00 /km (about 8:02.8 /mi). None of this is a medical test. None of it replaces a coach, a stress test, or a calibrated track. It is arithmetic for planning and for comparing what your watch said to what the treadmill claimed.

Pace is time per distance; speed is distance per time
Pace answers: how many minutes did each kilometre or mile cost? Format is usually mm:ss per km or mm:ss per mi. A 25-minute 5K is 25:00 ÷ 5 = 5:00 /km. Runners like pace because it scales intuition: if every kilometre feels like five minutes, you can extrapolate a 10K without converting hours.
Speed answers: how much ground in one hour? km/h and mph are the usual units. The same 5K in 25:00 is 5 km in 25/60 h = 12 km/h. In miles, 3.10686 mi in 0.4167 h ≈ 7.46 mph (often rounded to 7.5).
The relationship is reciprocal with unit gymnastics:
- speed (km/h) ≈ 60 ÷ pace (min/km)
- pace (min/km) ≈ 60 ÷ speed (km/h)
At 5:00 /km, speed = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. At 12 km/h, pace = 60 ÷ 12 = 5:00 /km. Imperial uses 1 mile = 1.609344 km on DevOkk, so 5:00 /km becomes about 8:02.8 /mi, not a naive 8:00.
Search results mix the units. A treadmill panel shows 6.0 mph. A race result shows 3:45 /km. A training plan says "easy 10:30/mi." Without converting, you cannot tell whether Tuesday was slower than Thursday. The pace calculator exists to keep one consistent clock.
The three-variable problem: you always know two
Distance racing reduces to three numbers: how far, how long, how fast (as pace or speed). Fix any two and the third is determined.
Examples:

DevOkk lets you choose which quantity is unknown. That is the "two of three" headline. You are not getting a fourth magic output like cadence, grade-adjusted effort, or VO₂. You are solving a linear relation.
Time entry accepts mm:ss under an hour (25:00) or h:mm:ss for longer efforts (1:45:29). The parser treats 25:00 as twenty-five minutes, not twenty-five hours. Distance toggles km or mi. Internally everything converts to seconds and kilometres before the solve, then converts back for display.
The default: 5 km in 25:00
The sample on Pace Calculator is deliberate. 5 km in 25:00 is a common recreational benchmark - parkrun territory, a "sub-25" 5K goal, a tempo block on a flat loop.
Work it by hand:
- Time → seconds: 25 × 60 = 1,500 s
- Pace: 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300 s/km = 5:00 /km
- Speed: 5 km ÷ (25/60) h = 12 km/h
- Miles: 5 km = 3.10686 mi; pace ≈ 25:00 ÷ 3.10686 ≈ 8:02.8 /mi
At that pace, a 10 km is 50:00, a half marathon (21.0975 km) about 1:45:29, a marathon (42.195 km) about 3:30:59. Those projections assume you could hold 5:00 /km forever on a flat course with no fueling limits - which nobody can. They are constant-pace extrapolations, not predictions of your first marathon. They are still useful for "if I can run 5K at X, what does naive math say about 10K?"
The calculator always prints 10 km, half, and marathon rows when it has a pace. If you work in miles, it converts distances but keeps the same underlying km constants (21.0975, 42.195).
Race projections vs race strategy
Constant-pace multiplication ignores real physiology. Most people positive split marathons - start faster, fade. Heat, hills, and turns add seconds per kilometre that flat-track math cannot see.
Still, coaches use back-of-envelope projections:
- VDOT-style thinking (without importing Jack Daniels' full tables here): if your 5K pace is honest and recent, doubling distance rarely means doubling time at the same pace.
- Safety check: a 5:00 /km 5K does not imply a 3:30 marathon is "easy." The projection is 3:30:59 at constant pace; actual marathon pacing usually runs 5–15% slower per km depending on training and course.
DevOkk does not apply a fatigue curve. It multiplies. That honesty is a feature. The number on screen is "straight-line extrapolation," not a guarantee.
Treadmill speed ≠ outdoor pace
Treadmills display belt speed - typically mph in the US, km/h elsewhere. Set 6.0 mph and the belt moves 6 statute miles per hour. DevOkk's Calories Burned Calculator labels running ~6 mph as 9.8 MET - a Compendium-style average, not your personal cost.
Why outdoor pace diverges:
- No air resistance indoors. At 10–12 km/h the difference is small; at 16+ km/h it grows. Some runners set treadmill incline to 1% to approximate outdoor cost - that is a rule of thumb, not physics you can trust to the second.
- Biomechanics. The belt pulls your foot back; you may overstride differently. Pace on a watch outdoors includes micro-pauses at crossings; a treadmill hour is continuous.
- Calibration. Consumer treadmills drift. A "6.0" display might not match a measured belt speed.
- GPS vs belt. Outdoor pace from a watch is distance ÷ time where distance comes from GPS or footpod. GPS error on tree cover can add or subtract seconds per kilometre.
Practical workflow: use the treadmill number to set intensity, then use outdoor races or track intervals to calibrate what "easy" means. Do not paste treadmill mph into a race plan and expect identical splits on a windy course.
Convert treadmill mph to pace if you want one language:
- mph → min/mi: pace (min/mi) = 60 ÷ mph
- 6.0 mph → 10:00 /mi ≈ 6:13 /km
Compare that to your outdoor 5K split. They will not match exactly. That gap is normal.
When to use pace vs speed in planning
Use pace when:
- You run measured loops in km or miles (track, marked trail, race)
- Your watch face shows min/km or min/mi
- You talk with runners who quote "4:30 k's"
Use speed when:
- You control a treadmill panel in mph/km/h
- You compare to cycling speed habits (still not the same sport)
- You export data from tools that only export km/h

Linking pace to energy and heart rate
Pace does not directly tell calories. Energy depends on mass, grade, fitness, and form. A rough bridge is MET tables: running ~6 mph ≈ 9.8 MET in the Compendium teaching set. Calories Burned Calculator uses MET × kg × hours. A 70 kg person at 9.8 MET for 30 minutes: 9.8 × 70 × 0.5 ≈ 343 kcal - an average, not a watch reading.
Do not add that session on top of a "very active" TDEE without reading BMR vs TDEE vs calories burned. Daily activity factors and session METs overlap if you double-count.
Heart rate is another layer. Target Heart Rate Calculator estimates zones from 220−age or Karvonen with resting HR. A 5:00 /km pace might land in zone 3 for one runner and zone 4 for another on the same day. Pace is external; HR is internal. Both are estimates. Beta blockers, caffeine, sleep, and heat move HR without changing your split.
Units, rounding, and the 0.1 that changes the story
Rounding pace to the nearest second per mile can move projected marathon times by minutes when multiplied over 42 km. DevOkk keeps enough precision internally; your watch may round display.
Mixing miles and kilometres in your head causes errors:
- A 5:00 /km is not a 5:00 /mi mile - it is about 8:03 /mi
- A 8:00 /mi is about 4:58.6 /km, slightly faster than 5:00 /km
When comparing parkrun (5 km) to a road mile, convert before declaring improvement.
What this calculator does not do
DevOkk's pace tool does not:
- Adjust for elevation (Naismith or Minetti grade rules)
- Model heat index or altitude
- Import FIT files or GPX
- Compute critical speed or lactate threshold pace
- Prescribe training zones or diagnose cardiopulmonary disease

A worked comparison: same effort, two displays
Suppose you ran 10 km in 52:30.
- Pace: 3,150 s ÷ 10 = 315 s/km = 5:15 /km
- Speed: 10 ÷ (52.5/60) = 11.43 km/h
- Miles: 10 km = 6.2137 mi; pace ≈ 8:27 /mi; speed ≈ 7.10 mph
Enter 10 km and 52:30 in the calculator with "solve for pace" and you should see the same structure. Switch unit to miles; distance 6.2137 mi (or enter 6.2 if that is what your track marks) and verify consistency within rounding.
Then open race projections. At 5:15 /km constant, half marathon math gives about 1:50:44. Treat that as "straight line," not a registration time.
The honest use case
Use Pace Calculator when you need to convert between min/km, min/mi, km/h, and mph without breaking a spreadsheet. Use it when you have two of distance, time, and pace and want the third. Glance at 10K/half/marathon rows as sanity checks, not as promises.

What is the difference between pace and speed for running?
Pace is time per unit distance - min/km or min/mi - so lower is faster. Speed is distance per hour - km/h or mph - so higher is faster. They are reciprocals with unit conversion. Pace Calculator shows both from the same time and distance.

Treadmills report belt speed (mph or km/h), not wind, grade, heat, or biomechanics. A 6 mph belt can feel easier than 6 mph outdoors. Pace from a watch uses GPS distance, which has its own error. Neither is a lab VO₂ test.
Can I use the pace calculator for cycling?
